Restoring The Real James Bond's Omega Watch 59-8D
This time I restore an Omega watch 59-8D that belonged to a real British Spy who was good friends with Ian Fleming the creator of the fictional British Spy James Bond. The name of the intelligence officer who owned this watch was Commander Wilfred 'Biffy' Dunderdale and he is the subject of a new book by Tim Spicer.

This Omega watch 59.8D movement was created in 1937 and is of very high quality but it had several serious issues that needed fixing and had not been serviced for decades.
During this film I let Colonel Tim Spicer do most of the talking and I hope you will enjoy listening to the quite incredible exploits of the man that many think was a major inspiration to Fleming in the creation of his character James Bond.

Longines Restoration - A Fallschirmjäger's Golden Gift

This time I restore a beautiful, and somewhat weirdly designed, Flagship watch by Longines. The watch has recently spent several years trapped behind a chest freezer but was eventually rediscovered by an old British Army colleague of mine, Sandy Carrick-Buchanan. Major SEA WOLF watches www.majorwatches.co.uk/seawolf/ Sandy received this impressively finished Longines Flagship from his Godfather...

www.majorwatches.co.uk/product/major-sea-wolf-original-black/ This time I show how, during my endeavours to create a good quality but affordable Dive Watch, I ended up exploding a Dive Watch in the pressure testing tank. The video tells the story of how I created my SEA WOLF Watch and the theory behind the pressure testing of a dive watch. It also shows what happens when a watch fails the test ...
Restoration of a Victorian Carriage Clock

www.majorwatches.co.uk/product/major-sea-wolf-original-black/ This time I repair and resassemble a beautiful carriage clock which dates from the 1880s; the height of the Victorian period in England. By luck I heard the mainspring on this clock the moment it snapped. It was as if the clock was crying out to me for help. So in this video you see the repair and restoration of the clock and the cal...

Thanks for this one Richard, superb stuff,,!!
I'm so glad I found this. Absolutely wonderful stuff.
Great watch, great character, great story’s, a masterpiece from yourself, major, keep up the good work, applause 👏
What size the crown wheel measurement and tooth’s may be I have it
Ol' Biffy woul dhave used a gob of C5 on the keyless works. ; )
Am I the only one grieving over the demise of the donor clock?
You are not alone Donald! This is a theme in the comments and despite it donating more than is shown in this edit I am beginning to think that I should maybe bring the donor back to life .... without creating another donor! Richard
cARA OU cOROA, ISSO É incrível, elet. ana..
Just catching up on these videos even 4 years later and I bought one of these from Argos for £11.99 about 6 months ago and it’s great 👍
Beautiful work congratulations, I wonder what the value of a watch like this is on the market? Can you tell its weight in gold?
Wow one great story and video thank you Richard
Thank you for taking a moment to say so! Richard
A face to the voice !!!! Love the channel.
Hi TheScubaboy56! Yes, I threw caution to the wind and showed my face! Thanks for the feedback! Richard
What a beautiful clock 👌
And its very accurate and runs for 8 days Anthony! Richard
It would be nice if you could find someone to make you another crown wheel. Seems a shame to have that nice donor watch give up its life for one part.
Yes da___man I agree! It's on a list but that list is not so very short! I think it would be very good to get the donor back in action without creating another donor! Thanks for the feedback. Richard
Incredible story, this is what makes great watches great!
Hi Robert ... very pleased you enjoyed this sir! And thank you so much for taking a moment to say so. Much appreciated! Richard
Good stuff. What about the donor clock? As a fairly valuable piece, would it be possible to get the donor wheel replaced, or will it just languish, unloved and forgotten in a drawer?
Good to hear from you Sergeant_Fury! So the donor actually donated more than is in the edit of this film so restoring it also is a problem. It is currently an assembled collection of spares for the more historically important piece .... but maybe I should make a film called 'restoring the donor!'. Hope this clarifies! Richard
Tremendous story to accompany another fine job, sir!
Thanks so much David! Richard
We love you, man! So much respect for your work.
Brilliant! Thank you for posting.
I have this same watch and would like it fixed. Can you do that?
What is the point of a restoration and not doing a polished.
Subscribed! Great vid!
What a ripping yarn. Easily the best thing I've seen on any media this year. Great research and presentation.
Hi MrTeabag58 .... That is very good to hear sir! Very pleased that you enjoyed this and thank you so much for taking a moment to let me know. Much appreciated. Richard
Great story and video , very good.
“Reassuringly expensive grease” is the phrase of the day! 😂 Thank you for a wonderful video, and ‘history’ lesson. Best regards from Western New York.
I thought it was a restoration of the Omega Watch 59-8Ds - not the clock...??? - But as others have said, this was a Fantastic story, the history and the fabulous restoration, even though it was the clock...??? I think you've outdone yourself on this one. Thank you so much for the journey... Kudos to you..!!
Great feedback! The back story on this film is powerful I think which helped me a lot. Very pleased you enjoyed it and I appreciate you taking the time to let me know. Richard
@@richardperrettwatchmaker ..So, was the Omega 59-8Ds watch restored...or the clock for its movement/gear ?
Hi jatco84 ... To clarify the Omega 59-8D is an oversized watch mechanism and has a lot more in common with a large watch than a clock in everything other than size. Biffy's Omega 59-8D came in the form of a desk clock as did the donor but if I was going to train a watchmaker on watch movements I would start with something like this movement as it has all the components of a watch but slightly oversized. The Donor is listed on eBay a Pocket Watch for this reason. Hope this clarifies. Richard
@@richardperrettwatchmaker yes.thank you for that.
When setting the time should the hands move clockwise or anticlockwise when turning the crown upwards?
more than just a restoration video, very engaging.
Buy a Vostok. You can regulate it yourself and it will still be waterproof to 60 metres (not water resistant) afterwards. Ask Richard😁
Nice and relaxing to whatch I’d like to learn how think you need a lot of patience
If I can’t take the ‘watch workings’, how can I clean the case and winding
The watch has just been found. It was given to my father in law on his 21st birthday. The writing inside the back cover is dated, 22/2/28.
That donor movement looked pretty good. You'll have to buy a second donor to fix the first.
Great! some awesome story and nice work! 10x!
A sublime mix of espionage and escapements. BTW I normally slam my highest bid in at about 8 seconds. This won’t give the opposition time to react.
Great video, as always. Great story. Did Colonel Tim comb his hair with an eggbeater?
This is the best video I've watched this year, it combines my 2 favourite subjects, watches and S.I.S. I look forward to reading Tim's book. Bloody good work Richard.
最后的雨声简直了!
Such an amazing video!
Absolutely top drawer viewing, very expensive fix but worth every penny.
Have mistakes too I noticed two
WOW!This was super interesting
Excellent. Love this kind of stuff.
What a great back story. Excellent job done again 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Very pleased you enjoyed this Paul! And thanks for taking a moment to say so! it's much appreciated. Richard
I should have kept the outside unrestored including the cracked glass! Patina can not be recreated. But that is me! The rest of the restaruation is brilliant!!
What a fantastic story. What a character playing a part in what would be the turning point in WW2. The bravery, and intelligence of the people behind the scenes of this time in history should be an example to us all. I sat mesmerized as the story unfolded. As a history buff, I find this time in the history of our world fascinating. Well done Sir, well done!!
It is such a good, an little known I think story, Bruce! This is great feedback to receive so thank you so much for taking a moment to write it. Much appreciated. Richard
Hi Richard, what can I say that others have not already said. Fantastic repair, superb story. You keep getting better and better. Please do not stop entertaining us.
Great feedback Mark and good to hear from you! Very pleased you enjoyed this and yes I shall endeavour to keep the videos coming through! Richard
Great video, amazing story and watch. Now I cannot wait for Tim Spicer's book on Biffy to be released🤩
Fascinating story and impeccable work by you!, great video!
fantastic job Richard and what a story. P.S could you have that crown wheel laser welded and shaped? probably not but just a thought. Andy UK
What an excellent story, thank you very much!!
Thanks Peter! Very pleased you enjoyed this and thank you for taking a moment to let me know! Richard
